A maintenance regime must be implemented in all buildings in accordance with emergency lighting standards and guidance.

Emergency lighting must be tested regularly, with records retained as evidence of compliance.

Central battery systems must undergo annual maintenance, including checks of the system and all batteries. Under BS 5266-1:2025 Emergency lighting of premises-code of practice, illuminance levels for all emergency lighting must also be checked five years after commissioning and every five years thereafter.
